LG, Samsung develop solar-powered cell phones
Samsung's phone, called Blue Earth, is a touch-screen model with rounded corners designed to look like a "well-rounded pebble," Samsung said.
Continuing the environmental theme, the phone is made from recycled plastic and doesn't include harmful substances such as brominated flame retardants, beryllium and phthalates.
The solar cells on the phone occupy most of the rear of the phone's case.
LG didn't release much information about its prototype phone, but images from the company show what appears to be a version of its KF750 Secret handset with, like the Samsung phone, solar cells covering the rear of the phone's case.
In both phones, which were announced almost simultaneously by the companies in South Korea today, the solar panel doesn't provide enough power to run the phone directly and is used to recharge a conventional battery inside the device.
So will the new phones mean an end to chargers?
Almost certainly the answer is: not initially. Samsung confirmed that its Blue Earth phone comes with a charger, but added that it's an energy-efficient one that draws just 30 milliwatts in standby mode.
LG says it hopes to commercialize solar-charged phones when it has a model that provides three minutes of talk time after charging for 10 minutes.
In the dark confines of a pocket or bag the phones won't be able to charge, so users will have to ensure they are regularly out in the light. Also, since the solar panels occupy the rear of the devices, they'll have to be kept face-down for maximum efficiency, which might lead to scratching and scuffing of the display itself.
Still, development of the handsets shows that companies are thinking about making Earth-friendly products or are at least thinking about the environmentally conscious consumer and the growing market for "green" products.
Both companies offered no timing for when the prototypes might become commercial models or pricing details.
ITC says Samsung infringed Kodak camera patents
foxbusiness.com - An administrative law judge at the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled that Samsung has infringed two camera patents developed by Kodak.
The ruling is an initial determination, meaning it is now subject to review by the commission.
The ruling is a result of a complaint first filed late last year by Kodak charging both Samsung and LG with patent infringement. The patents cover technology related to image capture, compression and data storage, and a method for previewing images, Kodak said.
Kodak asked the ITC to prevent LG and Samsung from importing and selling products in the U.S. that it says infringe on its patents. Kodak did not name the specific products that it says use the patented technologies.
The ruling, issued on Thursday, charges Samsung with infringing the two patents and denies Samsungs request for a ruling that the patents are invalid.
LG is not named in the ruling because LG and Kodak settled their disputes over the matter. On December 4, Kodak and LG said they had formed a cross-license agreement. As part of the deal, Kodak asked the ITC to drop its investigation into LG, and both companies settled related patent lawsuits.
Samsung can now ask the full commission to review the initial determination. If the commission upholds the ruling, it can order Samsung to stop importing products that use the relevant patents.

MIT unveils new 'smart' bike wheel
The clever folks at MIT have developed a smart wheel that could give bicycle riders a 21st century boost.
Unveiled Tuesday at the Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change, MIT's new Copenhagen wheel is trying to do its part to help the environment by making bike riding easier and more enjoyable.
The wheel's battery can store energy as you step on the brakes and then return that power back to help you climb a hill or boost your speed. A sensor inside the hub measures your effort when you ride. As you pedal forward, the sensor tells the wheel's electric motor to give you a boost. When you hit the brakes, the motor regenerates, slowing you down and recharging the batteries. The goal behind this design is to encourage people to bike farther distances, relying less on gas-guzzling transportation.
"Over the past few years we have seen a kind of biking renaissance, which started in Copenhagen and has spread from Paris to Barcelona to Montreal," said Carlo Ratti, director of the MIT Senseable City Laboratory and the Copenhagen Wheel project, in a statement. "It's sort of like 'Biking 2.0'--whereby cheap electronics allow us to augment bikes and convert them into a more flexible, on-demand system."
Beyond giving you an energy boost, the wheel has other secrets in its bright red hub. Using sensors and a Bluetooth connection, the wheel can talk to an iPhone mounted on the handlebars. Through an iPhone app, you can check your speed, direction, and distance traveled. The wheel can also monitor traffic conditions and smog and even keep track of your bicycling buddies.
The Copenhagen wheel embeds all the required electronics inside the hub, so no other gadgets need to be added to the bike frame. A special spoking method devised by the team also lets you install the hub on any rim.
Any existing bike can be retrofitted with the wheel. In fact, the MIT team sees it as a plug-and play-device, one that any bike owner should be able to easily install as a back wheel.
The Copenhagen wheel is targeted to hit the market within a year and will be sold by online retailers, consumer electronics vendors, and possibly bike stores. The wheel will cost as much as a standard electronic bike--somewhere between $500 and $1000.
MIT's SENSEable City Lab developed the initial prototype of the wheel for the city of Copenhagen, in cooperation with Italian company Ducati Energia and supported by the Italian Ministry for the Environment. The first orders will likely come from Copenhagen itself, which hopes to retrofit bicycles as replacements for city employee cars.
"The Copenhagen Wheel is part of a more general trend: that of inserting intelligence in our everyday objects and of creating a smart support infrastructure around ourselves for everyday life," said Assaf Biderman, associate director of the project, in a statement.
Chrome edges out Safari in browser usage
Google's browser has passed Safari in terms of worldwide browser usage--at least by one measurement.
NetApplications' measurements of browser usage share, which track which browsers individuals use based on visits to the company's network of Web sites, gave Chrome the third-place spot after No. 1 Internet Explorer and No. 2 Firefox for the week of December 6 through 12, according to a Computerworld story Tuesday. Chrome had 4.4 percent share to Safari's 4.37 percent.
Google released beta versions of Chrome for Mac OS X and Linux on December 8. Earlier, only developer channel versions had been available. Google plans to release the "stable" versions January 12, according to the Chromium development calendar.
Take these usage share numbers with a grain of salt. Even though 0.03 percentage points still is a lot of people in the real world, it is a small fraction, and a change in Net Applications' assumptions in August led to share changes two orders of magnitude more dramatic. Weekly statistics also vary: Although Firefox cleared 25 percent share in one week of November, it averaged only 24.72 percent for the overall month.
I've asked various browser makers about how trustworthy they view NetApplications' statistics to be. The answers generally are favorable but not ringing endorsements.
Regardless of the precise details, though, the Chrome trajectory is upward: its November usage share was 3.93 percent to Safari's 4.36 percent.
And although Google relied on word of mouth for promoting its original online search product, it's taking a more active role with Chrome. The latest example: a "Chrome for Christmas" site that lets people send invitations to download Chrome.
Firefox proved that a browser not bundled with an operating system can be successful, and Chrome could show the idea isn't a fluke if its growth continues.

Nokia 5235 Touchscreen Phone – Come With Music Store Catalogue
Hands-on With the Fusion Garage Joojoo Tablet
So let's talk about the hardware. It's heavy. Compared to what? Nothing really but I suppose you could compare it to a laptop. The weight is a non-issue once you place it on your lap or rest it against a crossed leg. The 12.1-inch capacitive screen is fairly responsive, but neither the software nor hardware is final. I'll reserve judgment until a production unit has been sent over for review, which I'm told will be later this month. The Wi-Fi at the hotel where the demo was taking place crapped out, so we weren't able to capture the Joojoo streaming HD content off of YouTube, but I did see it earlier and it works.
Joojoo is built on Linux and currently just browses the Web, but the plan is to open up the API to developers and see what they can build for the platform in the future. Sound familiar? I'm impressed with what I saw from this pre-production Joojoo, but at $500 it's kind of expensive for what it is. I'm more intrigued by what FG has in store down the road.
Facebook's Privacy Changes Expose Founder Zuckerberg
Facebook released a set of Dec. 9 changes to Facebook's privacy policy that includes a new set of Facebook user information in public search results, everything from the complete list of a user's friends, to their group memberships and personal profile pictures. (TOSBack did a good comparison of the revisions.) Users logging into Facebook were prompted to revise their settings and had a chance to opt out, but the default options Facebook generated were liberal, putting inattentive users at risk of exposing more than they might want. Privacy advocates quickly dubbed the changes a "privacy rollback."
But at least Facebook wasn't two-faced about the change. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg opened up his own profile, a change Gawker immediately seized on, posting highlights of the 290 pictures of Zuckerberg that suddenly became visible. It's a glimpse behind the scenes of the life of the hotshot Web billionaire, albeit not a particularly exciting one. Zuckerberg's photos aren't all that different than those of the typical college student: working, traveling and some lightweight debauchary. Lest anyone think Zuckerberg was simply tripped up by the change, it's been nearly a day since the photos came out, and they're still visible. We think he's a willing example.
Still, if you don't want to get Zuckerberged yourself, you can make sure you've rolled back the "rollback" by tweaking your profile's privacy settings to bring your profile details and photos back behind the wall. But if these changes proved anything, it's that there's no guarantees Facebook won't try and get you to be more open again.
Apple Countersues Nokia Over Phone Patents
Apple's lawsuit claims Nokia is infringing on 13 of Apple's patents, and says the Finland-based company chose to "copy the iPhone," especially its user interface, to make up for its declining share of the high-end phone market.
Nokia's lawsuit, filed in October, claims that Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple infringes on 10 of its patents covering both phone calls and Wi-Fi access.
(More on Techland: Nokia N900 Now Available in the US)
The patents Apple alleges Nokia is infringing deal with, among other things: connecting a phone to a computer, teleconferencing, menus on a touch screen, power conservation in chips, and "pattern and color abstraction in a graphical user interface." The company also denies Nokia's claims of patent infringement.
In a statement, Nokia said it will review the claims and respond "in due course."
Apple said Nokia fell behind in the smart phone market because it chose to focus on old-fashioned cell phones with conventional user interfaces at a time when "smart" phones were growing increasingly popular.
Countersuits are a staple of patent litigation, which often ends in cross-licensing agreements. Nokia said in October that 40 phone manufacturers _ but not Apple _ have licensed the patents in its lawsuit.
Both suits were filed in federal court in Delaware.
U.S.-traded shares of Nokia rose 35 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $12.91 in afternoon trading, and Apple's shares fell $2.14 to $194.29.
